Why a Wi-Fi 6E rollout still needs a site survey
6 GHz gives you clean spectrum and wide channels. It does not travel through concrete any better than 5 GHz — it travels through it worse.
What changes at 6 GHz
- Higher path loss, so cell sizes shrink and you need more access points for the same coverage.
- Clients fall back to 5 GHz at the edges, so your 5 GHz plan still has to be correct.
- Power limits differ by regulatory domain, and FCC rules for 6 GHz are enforced at the controller.
What a survey produces
A predictive model from the floor plan, validated on site with a spectrum analyzer, gives you mounting positions, channel and power plan, and a cabling list. On a 40-AP site this typically moves four to six mounting points and removes one or two units from the count — it pays for itself.
